Long Description:
Coastal Skin Surgery and Dermatology is a privately-owned, comprehensive, dermatology practice and dermatopathology laboratory located in a highly desirable resort / vacation / retirement area of Northwest Florida’s Emerald Coast. We are currently looking for an experienced Histotech to join our team. The position is Monday through Friday with the hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm. Compensation is highly competitive WITH an outstanding benefits package.

The ideal candidate would have a BS Degree and be HT or HTL certified and have a minimum 1 year of experience using histology techniques. He/she would also have strong knowledge of standard laboratory equipment to set up and perform routine and specialized histology tasks, including the use of a light microscope, tissue handling, and slide preparation. Experience with Electronic Medical Records, Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook) and good communication skills, both oral and written, strongly preferred.


• Independently performs the major tasks involved in the routine preparation of histological slides from surgical and biopsy specimens (of human tissues) to include embedding, microtomy, mounting, and staining of tissue sections, and labeling of finished slides.

• Independently performs small gross, clerical, and technical functions required for core front-end dermatopathology laboratory operations.

• Prepares standard laboratory reagents and solutions with precision.

• Operates basic laboratory equipment, such as tissue processors (standard and microwave), embedding station, tissue microtome, tissue stainer, and slide coverslipper.

• Schedules and loads tissue cassettes into the tissue processors to maximize workflow efficiency and troubleshoots any issues with the processor’s protocol.

• Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment and observe established safety procedures.

• Keeps informed of current literature and techniques in histotechnology.

• Maintains a safe, clean, and well-organized work area.

• Performs self-auditing tasks for Quality Assurance protocols.

• Performs lab maintenance to include cleaning, restocking and specimen discarding. Additionally, assists with special projects, as applicable and helps prepare weekly and monthly maintenance reports

• Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.

• Must be able to correctly and accurately embed a wide variety of tissues while maintaining minimum national cutting standards of 30 blocks per hour, embedding standards 50 blocks per hour and able to cut artifact free 4 micron sections.

• Must be able to perform a high quality manual H&E stain and perform certain special stains i.e. (AFB, Alcian blue, Brown-Hopps, Congo red, Elastic, Iron, L/H&E, Mucicarmine, PAS, PAS-D, GMS, and Trichrome). Must have sound understanding of basic laboratory instrumentation to include pH meter, balances, hydrometers, microtomes, cryostats, cover slippers and tissue processors, and be able to prepare percent, molar and normal solutions and stains.

• Must have the manual dexterity and motor coordination to follow established technical, safety and clerical procedures, be attentive to detail and precise in performing technical tasks, and possess fundamental knowledge of basic histo-technique to include fixation, decalcification, processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special stains and frozen sections

• Required to have sound knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and ability to read and write English. Must have a thorough understanding of standard precautions, chemical hygiene and laboratory safety. Attention to detail necessary and effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Laboratory Environment - may be exposed to disease-bearing specimens, hazardous chemicals or fumes, other hazards normally associated with a clinical laboratory setting.
