Short Description:
The UW-Madison, Department of Surgery is seeking an experienced, certified histology histotechnologist to act as the primary laboratory technician.
Long Description:
This position is in the Department of Surgery, Histology Core Facility. The Core facility supports basic and translational research in the areas of vascular, otolaryngology, and solid organ transplantation, with extension of services to the UW campus and local biotech companies.
Successful candidates will have strong verbal communication skills. This position collaborates and consults with a diverse group of researchers.
1. Work independently and be responsible for all day to day technical lab operations, including specimen processing/embedding, microtomy (both paraffin and frozen preservation), and manual staining of H&Es, dye based special stains, and immunohistochemical protocols on a myriad of human and animal tissues.
2. Consult with researchers in experimental design, offering advice on current histological options and troubleshooting existing barriers, specifically seeking out and suggesting suitable methods of specimen collection and representation for analysis using routine histological techniques and advanced methods, such as immunohistochemistry.
3. Independently evaluate the results and recommend adjustment to procedures based on sample type, previous results and research goals
4. Perform extensive immunohistochemical protocol development, adaptation and quality assurance to achieve results necessary to facilitate PI publications, presentations and applications for extramural funding.
5. Train graduate students and other lab personnel in histology techniques, microscopic photography and methods write-ups for grant submissions and publications.
6. Maintain specimen, data and lab management systems for accurate sample tracking, billing and maintenance of supplies and reagents to run the core facility.
7. The individual needs to be self-motivated, display a high propensity for time management and organization, and be able to balance the needs of many diverse research needs simultaneously.
